A few years ago, I was deep in my fitness journey and convinced I had finally cracked the code. I was making protein mug cakes every day with a powder that promised 40 grams of protein and under 5 grams of sugar. My kids were eating it too. Life felt pretty dialed in but then the scale stopped moving...

On a gut feeling, I sent that powder to a third-party lab, and the results were not pretty. A gram or two of actual protein per serving and nearly 36 grams of sugar. I had been eating glorified brownie mix and calling it clean eating. I was furious in the way only a slightly unhinged fitness dad can appreciate.
