FAQ

Everything people actually ask us, including the two that come up most: why the chips end up at the top of the bag, and what to do when your cake comes out dense.

How do I make a Pastel mug cake?

Scoop, add water, stir, microwave. It is ready in about 90 seconds. Use the scoop and water measures printed on your bag, since that ratio is what gets you cake instead of pudding.

Why are there more chips at the top of the bag?

Because chips are lighter than the mix, and anything that travels on a truck settles. It is not a packing error, it is physics having opinions. Give the bag a good roll and shake before your first scoop, and again every few servings. A well-mixed bag is the single biggest difference between a great mug cake and a dense one.

My mug cake did not rise. What went wrong?

Almost always a chip-heavy scoop. If the chips have settled, a scoop can end up with more chips and less of the mix that actually does the rising. Shake the bag properly, take a level scoop rather than a heaped one, and try again. If it is still dense, ease off the water slightly on the next one.

Can I make it in the oven or an air fryer?

It is built and tested for the microwave, which is where the 90 seconds comes from. Other methods are your own delicious science experiment, and the timing will be nothing like 90 seconds. Start low, check often, and do not walk away.

Can I add toppings or mix-ins?

Please do. Peanut butter, berries, a spoon of yoghurt, a drizzle of something you will not admit to. The cake is the base, not the whole plan.

How much protein is in one serving?

25 g in Brownie Points and 24 g in Cinna-Buns.

Where does the protein come from? Is it whey?

No whey. The protein comes from egg white and wheat, which is why it bakes like cake rather than like a protein shake that gave up. It does contain milk as an ingredient, so it is not dairy-free.

What allergens does it contain?

Egg, milk, soy and wheat. If any of those are a problem for you, this is not your dessert, and we would rather tell you now than after checkout.

Is it gluten-free, keto, or vegan?

No to all three, and we are not going to dress that up. It is made with wheat, so there is gluten. There are around 35 g of carbs per serving, so it is not keto or low-carb. It contains egg and milk, so it is not vegan or plant-based. What it is: a real dessert with about 25 g of protein in it.

Do you use seed oils?

No. There is no canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed or grapeseed oil in either flavour. The fats come from cocoa butter and butter powder, from MCT oil, and in Cinna-Buns from the palm oil in the cinnamon chips. That is palm oil, not palm kernel oil, which is the question we get asked most. Both flavours also contain soy lecithin, an emulsifier that holds the chocolate chunks and cinnamon chips together. It is soy-derived, so we would rather say it plainly than let you find it on the back of the bag: it is a lecithin, not a seed oil, but if you avoid anything from soy at all, that one is worth knowing about.

I do not have a tablespoon. What else can I measure the water with?

Use a quarter cup. The bag calls for 4 tablespoons of water per serving, and 4 tablespoons is exactly a quarter cup, so it is the same amount either way with nothing to round. If you are measuring with something else: 4 tablespoons is 12 teaspoons, or about 60 ml. Do get it close, though. Water is the one measurement here that decides whether you get cake or pudding.

What is tagatose?

A rare sugar that shows up naturally in small amounts in dairy and some fruit. We use it to sweeten, and it is a big part of why this tastes like dessert rather than like an apology.

Is it OK for kids?

It is a dessert, so treat it like one. Not suitable for children under 2 because of the added sugar. Beyond that it is a treat, not a supplement, and nobody needs it to grow up strong.

How many servings are in a bag?

15 servings per bag, at $49.99.

How should I store it?

Seal the bag properly and keep it somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sun. Do not refrigerate the dry mix, because condensation is the enemy of a good scoop.

Do you have an affiliate program?

We do, and we are always accepting new applications. If you have an audience that likes dessert, protein, or the specific joy of eating cake on purpose, we would like to talk. Coaches, trainers, dietitians, recipe creators and people who are simply very persuasive at brunch all count. Get in touch and tell us where you post, and we will send you the details.
